Details

In 1873 Amelia Edwards and a friend visiting Egypt, hiring their own private sailing boat and journeying the length of the Nile to Nubia (modern north Sudan). Along the way they stopped to see the Pyramids, the Temples of Dendera, and the tombs of Saqqara and Luxor.

This tour, inspired by this journey, follows in Amelia's footsteps with camel and donkey rides optional rather than the required mode of transport. We travel to Alexandria to explore this seaside city including the catacombs, the Qaitbay Citadel, and Pompey's Pillar at the Serapeum. Upon our return to Cairo we visit the Pyramids of Saqqara, Giza, and Dashur as well as the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum.

We head south stopping at the sites of Beni Hassan, Amarna, Abydos, and Dendera. These middle Egypt sites are rarely visited by tourists and provide the opportunity to see rural life in modern Egypt. In Luxor we explore the temples and tombs on both sides of the Nile including Karnak and Luxor temples, the Valley of the Kings and Queens, and the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bhari.

At Esna we visit the Temple of Khnum, before joining our private sailing dahabeya to Aswan. Over four nights we gently float up the Nile stopping at Edfu and Kom Ombo as well as local villages. In Aswan we visit Elephantine and Philae Islands and journey to the Temples of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel. We finish our journey with a relaxing cruise on Lake Nasser, seeing the sites of Nubia.

Along our journey we will experience the delicious food of modern Egypt and even attempt some cooking of our own. 1000 Miles up the Nile provides the most comprehensive experience of Egypt's vast history and the wonders this country has to offer. Tailored for those passionate about Egyptian history, this is a trip of a lifetime learning about the dawn of ancient Egypt to the modern day.
